Emily Wieja was born in 1978 in Vermont in the United States and lived in Greece and in suburban Maryland as a young child. At the age of 12 she moved to the Netherlands with her parents and attended middle and high school, returning briefly to the United States to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and completing her bachelor of arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the the Hague. She is currently attending the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont.
E. Wieja’s work is visually bold and contains elements of both humor and melancholy. By setting up intriguing, suggestive images that imply any range of emotive ideas she invites the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Wieja’s work is driven by a desire to combine the best and most evocative qualties of literary and visual arts into graphic narratives.
